Carolyn Jacobs
In honor of NMF's upcoming 30th anniversary and National Philanthropy Month, we want to celebrate the contributions of our donors! We will be highlighting a donor a day for the month of November.
Please be sure to check the blog often to read about the wonderful stories of giving back to the northwest region.
If you are interested in making a difference through the services of our community foundation, our development officers would be happy to assist you. Please contact Caryl Turnow or Lisa Peterson at 218-759-2057 to learn more.
Carolyn Jacobs was first introduced to philanthropy by her parents, who were very involved in raising funds for a non-profit organization in the Chicago area, where she grew up. The organization served adults with developmental disabilities. Her father's twin cousins were recipients of those services, so it was a very personal endeavor for her parents who gave their time, energy and dollars to the organization.
As Carolyn reflects on her past, she can see that what motivated her parents also motivates her. "I give for several reasons: First, because I have the financial means, I feel I have a social obligation to contribute beyond my personal sphere of self and family. Secondly, I feel great when I support non-profit work in my community that benefits the community as a whole. And finally, I like the sense of connection I feel to organizations and to my community that comes from philanthropic giving.”
One of the many reasons she loves northwest Minnesota, and Bemidji in particular, is because the size of the towns or cities allows one to see and feel how each contribution makes a difference. "I am drawn to support my local arts and cultural organizations through NMF because I have personal relationships with those people and organizations, and I readily see the fruits of my donations throughout my community." In turn, Carolyn believes she lives a more fulfilling life in northwest Minnesota, and her friends and community benefit too.
As a longtime resident, Carolyn remembers the McKnight Foundation establishing the Minnesota Initiative Funds in the 1980's. "The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is such an important entity for our region - its sole purpose is to promote all that is good, the reasons we all want to live here." She said, "I give nationally, but having a local community foundation is personal - it involves the things that are my everyday life in Bemidji."
In addition to setting up the Frederick Marshall Fund for the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts in honor of her late husband, and stewarding the recent success of the Chief Bemidji Statue Project Fund, Carolyn also works closely with the Nameless Coalition for the Homeless Fund. She believes because of partnering with NMF, the group received a generous donation of $100,000. "People know the Foundation has a solid reputation, and that they are a reliable source to make a secure donation - their credibility makes it easy to give!"
