Jody Horntvedt
In honor of NMF's upcoming 30th anniversary and National Philanthropy Month, we want to celebrate the contributions of our donors! We will be highlighting a donor a day for the month of November.
Please be sure to check the blog often to read about the wonderful stories of giving back to the northwest region.
Jody Horntvedt, Baudette |
Jody Horntvedt has lived and worked in the Northwest region for 30 years. She loves the area because of the caring, hard working, talented and inspiring people who make it home.
She first came to Lake of the Woods County in 1971 when her family purchased a cabin on Wabanica Bay near Baudette. "We would spend at least three, week-long vacations there every year," said Jody. Adding, "I came to love the area, and I also came to love this guy who farmed across the bay from our family's cabin!"
Jody later married "that guy" in 1982. She and her husband Ken have both been active in their community giving both of their time and treasure. Her first introduction to philanthropy and the concept of endowments came in the late 1990s when through her job she was trying to establish an account where individuals could donate money that would sustain an existing leadership program.
The Red River Valley Emerging Leadership Program was established in 1985, but brought under the umbrella of NMF in 1998. Because of the secured financial stability of the fund, the program now has more than 1,000 alumni.
"I choose to give to funds managed by the Northwest Minnesota Foundation because they support regional efforts that are important to me and many others living in this part of the state," said Jody. She also encourages others to think about really matters to them and find ways they can invest to show their support for their local community and the great people who live there.
